A common and often itchy scalp condition in which small pieces of flaky skin fall off the head.
What is it?
Dandruff is a prevalent skin issue that chiefly impacts the scalp, leading to white particles of dead skin being shed from the scalp and landing on the shoulders. Frequently, it's associated with an itching scalp. Multiple factors contribute to dandruff development such as dry skin, reaction to hair products, insufficient shampooing, and a yeast-like fungus known as malassezia. Dandruff usually affects adults and is more frequent in males than females. Despite being widespread, it can cause discomfort and embarrassment for those affected. Nevertheless, it's crucial to understand that dandruff is not linked to poor cleanliness, though it may become more noticeable if you don't regularly cleanse your hair.
How is it treated?
One of our board-certified dermatologists at Bexley Dermatology can offer cruicial assistance in managing and eliminating dandruff. Often, regular washing with a medicated shampoo may rid your scalp of these dry, itchy flakes. We recommend getting a shampoo according to your hair type, i.e., curly, fine or coarse. When using a medicated shampoo, we also recommend protecting your scalp from the sun, as these shampoos can make your scalp more sensitive to UV rays.
Most people do not require medical attention for their dandruff. However, if your dandruff doesn’t go away after using a medicated shampoo or if you develop a severe case, we can prescribe a stronger shampoo or medication. We can also evaluate whether your dandruff is a sign of a medical condition, such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, a fungal infection on the scalp or eczema.
