What is it?

Excisiions are typically used to remove unwanted or potentially harmful lesions. Dangerous lesions can include  basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. Excisions can also be used to eliminate a benign (non-cancerous) lesion for aesthetic purposes or to reduce irritation.

Excisions are frequently referred to as biopsies when used to extract a sample for laboratory diagnosis. A biopsy refers to a procedure where a sample of tissue from your body is taken to be examined under a microscope. This diagnostic examination is used to determine the nature of skin abnormalities like moles, lesions, rashes, or growths that could be indicative of skin diseases, allergies, infections, or cancer. It can also act as a tool to monitor the progression of treatment in certain conditions. At Bexley Dermatology, we promptly contact patients once the lab diagnosis is complete, reducing how long you need to wait.

We recognize that an excision procedure can make some people anxious, and that's why we strive to create a calm and supportive environment. Most excisions do not casue notable pain and we using numbing to make you more comfortable. We send samples to our pathology lab for microscopic analysis. Our lab is fully certified by the College of American Pathologists, ensuring it adheres to the highest standards of quality and precision.

Types of growths that may require a biopsy for diagnosis include:

Moles

Warts

Cysts

Actinic keratosis

Skin cancers

Skin infections

Skin tags

Bullous pemphigoid

Inflammatory skin conditions like dermatitis and psoriasis

What to expect

Post-procedure home care following an excision is usually uncomplicated and direct. The medical professionals at our dermatology clinic will provide you with clear guidelines to adhere to in the days post your treatment. This commonly involves switching your dressing, cleansing the treated area, and using a recommended skin ointment to expedite recovery and avert infection. The Bexley Dermatology is here to ensure your best care and speedy recovery.
