Any disease or condition resulting from a fungus (yeast or mold) most typically affects the skin, hair, nails, or mucous membranes when the immune system is weakened, or environmental changes occur.
What is it?
Fungal infections arise when invasive fungi attack a region of the body, multiplying and leading to illness. These fungi can inhabit the skin, inside the body, or our surrounding environment, chiefly affecting the body's surface including the skin, nails, or hair. Infections of this kind are typically not life-threatening for someone with a robust immune system, however, they can pose serious risks for individuals with compromised immune systems. There are numerous types of fungal infections, some of the prevalent ones being athlete's foot, ringworm, yeast infections, jock itch and nail fungi.
How is it treated?
Our medical providers are experts in diagnosing and treating conditions of the skin, including fungal infections. Confirmation of a particular fungal infection may necessitate a comprehensive examination or laboratory tests to identify the particular fungus involved. Treatment typically involves antifungal medications which can be either topical (applied to skin) or systemic (taken orally or injected). In severe or chronic cases, a referral may be suggested for further specialized care. It's essential to seek advice from a board-certified dermatologist if you think you have a fungal infection, to avert further spreading and potential complications.
