Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder causing patches of skin to lose their pigment due to melanocytes (pigment-making cells) being attacked and destroyed.
What is it?
Vitiligo is a long-lasting skin disorder that leads to the development of light or white-colored patches on the skin due to a decrease in melanin – the pigment that gives skin its color. In simpler terms, your skin loses its normal color and forms pale areas known as macules or patches. Macules are smaller than five millimeters, while patches are five millimeters or larger. Some individuals with vitiligo notice their hair turning white in the affected regions.
Vitiligo typically manifests in individuals in their 20s and often begins to show on the face, arms, hands, or feet. The condition usually advances over time, with an increasing number of skin areas losing pigmentation. Vitiligo can affect people of all skin colors, but the lighter patches are usually more visible on darker or tanned skin.
At Bexley Dermatology, we are skilled in diagnosing and treating vitiligo, whether it's in small, localized areas or generalized vitiligo that impacts multiple body regions. With the right treatment approach, we have been successful in restoring skin color for many patients.
