A common viral infection causing painful blisters or ulcers seen either around the mouth/face or genital area.
What is it?
Herpes is a common infection caused by herpes simplex viruses. There are two types of herpes: Herpes Simplex-1 (HSV-1) tends to affect your mouth and face with a cold sore or fever blister. Herpes Simplex-2 (HSV-2), also known as genital herpes, affects your genital area, causing sores that are often mistaken for pimples or ingrown hairs. You may contract this infection through multiple sex partners, not using protection during sex, having a weakened immune system, or having a history of sexually transmitted diseases. Once contracted, it’s a lifelong condition that will appear intermittently. When these painful, itchy blisters are active, they can last up to 10 days.
How is it treated?
During an outbreak, our dermatologists can often diagnose herpes simplex by simply looking at the sores. Sometimes, a dermatologist may take a swab from a sore to confirm a diagnosis and have it tested in a laboratory. While there is no cure for herpes simplex, sores often clear themselves without treatment. While herpes is not life-threatening and can be easily treated and remedied, Bexley Dermatology can help to ease their onset and symptoms before they begin.
